Alberto Alexander – Dramatic Baritone

Music Across the World

Salvadoran baritone Alberto Rodriguez made his German debut in 2024 at Schloss Eppstein as Guglielmo in a production by Opera Classica Europa. Recently, he was the winner of the Licia Albanese award in the Romana Vaccaro competition as well as a semi-finalist in the 77th AsLiCo competition in Como. He currently studies under the direction of Marco Chingari and Francesca Patanè, who, impressed by his distinctive voice, invited him to study the art of singing in Luino.

Born on March 2nd, 1994, in Greenbrae, California, Alberto spent part of his childhood in El Salvador, where he was surrounded by the rich musical culture of his family. His father, also a musician, instilled in him a deep appreciation for music beyond Salvadoran traditions. Though his father’s early passing limited their time together, his eclectic musical tastes were firmly established.

A devoted lover of jazz and classical music from an early age, he was admitted to the specialized arts program at Marin School of the Arts, where he played trombone in symphonic honor bands and top-ranking jazz ensembles. During his senior year of high school, he discovered his gift for singing, leadership, and teaching through a student-directed jazz choir led by Laila Smith. Nonetheless, Latino tradition pushed him toward science degrees in pursuit of what was seen as “true success” in America.

Initially pursuing Cellular and Molecular Biology at Humboldt State University to meet his family’s expectations, Alberto’s passion for music soon proved irresistible. He led a student-directed choir to success and later changed his major to music education, dedicating himself fully to a career in music.

Throughout his studies, Alberto distinguished himself as a versatile musician and dedicated collaborator. He assisted faculty in sectionals and rehearsals, performed in concerts and competitions, and elevated his student-directed choir to represent the school in semi-national competitions. His talents attracted the attention of esteemed mentors such as Daniela Mineva, a world-class pianist who taught him piano and the art of listening, and Elisabeth Harrington, professor of vocal performance, who recognized his potential as an opera singer. Under her guidance, he studied the roles of Aeneas (Dido and Aeneas) and Conte Almaviva (Le nozze di Figaro) for university productions.

These accomplishments earned him a scholarship and a Graduate Assistantship at the prestigious University of Northern Colorado School of Music, where he pursued a master’s degree in Choral and Orchestral Conducting in order to refine his understanding of stage presence and performance.

Alberto continued his vocal studies with William Wilson, a classically trained baritone with extensive performance experience in Germany, and Derek Chester, a tenor whose international career in Germany began as a member of the Gächinger Kantorei. Both mentors strongly encouraged him to pursue a career in opera.

In 2021, William Wilson offered him a pivotal opportunity to perform in Germany. In just two months, Alberto was expected to memorize five complete opera choruses, learn a small role, and acquire basic German speaking skills — a challenge he met with determination and success. He went on to perform the choruses of Aida, Nabucco, La Cenerentola, and Die Zauberflöte, as well as the role of Barone in La Traviata with Opera Classica Europa. His performances left a strong impression on audiences and professionals alike, leading to auditions for the ZAV in Cologne and Stuttgart, where he was accepted as a professional opera singer in Germany.

Demonstrating his commitment to his community, Alberto raised well over his initial $5,000 goal through a GoFundMe campaign, with supporters who helped make his return to Germany possible the following year.

Since then, Alberto has performed regularly as both a soloist and ensemble member. Highlights include his interpretation of Guglielmo at Schloss Eppstein and solo appearances in productions featuring renowned artists such as John Osborn and Neivi Martinez at prestigious venues including the Alte Oper Frankfurt, the Hessischer Rundfunk, and Schloss Braunfels. He has also participated in competitions and masterclasses across Europe.

His passion for vocal development has led him to work with esteemed coaches, including Pablo Assanti di Cupillo of the Gran Teatre del Liceu, Alexandra Rosa Zabala, Michael and Romana Vaccaro, Derek Ballard of Staatstheater Mainz, and Juanita Lascarro and Takeshi Moriuchi of Oper Frankfurt. He currently studies under Francesca Patanè and Marco Chingari — both of whom have distinguished operatic careers, including performances alongside artists such as Plácido Domingo and Renato Bruson.

Alberto remains active in the German musical community, performing with the German American Community Choir and the International Choir Frankfurt as a singer, soloist, and vocal coach, while also teaching a growing studio of German voice students.

Alberto Rodriguez is currently preparing for the Operalia competetion this year, in Shanghai, China, continuing his steady ascent as a promising emerging baritone of his generation.
